The Accessibility to Resources for Seniors in Eugene, Oregon
The accessibility to resources for seniors is an expanding issue in all societies. Medical and social programs provided through facilities to care for the aged are not necessarily included in eldercare funding but can be provided through additional organizations and institutions.
Resources for seniors are currently undergoing a financial crisis. According to the article, “Underfunded and overstretched- the crisis in care for the Elderly published by The Guardian, since 2010 council funding for adult social care has fallen on average by 11%.” The senior financial crisis is due to the increasing senior population, the lack of quality care accessible, and the increasing cost of living, while funding for these resources is decreasing. Currently, according to data collected by the National Council on Aging, “almost one-in-three Americans over 65 years old is economically insecure, therefore they lack many fundamental resources needed to meet basic food, housing, and medical needs.” The NCOA provides tools in order to educate those about aging and how they can combat issues like long-term services and supports, nutrition, money management, and the prevention of falls.
The history of eldercare originated approximately 500,000 years ago. Senior services date back to eldercare techniques in Ancient Greece where children or extended family were required to take care of elders who needed assistance. Through scientific advancements, medical texts were published promoting education and knowledge on elderly care services. “According to the Senior Living Blog, in 1823, the United States established one of the first eldercare residences, the Philadelphia’s Indigent Widows’ and Single Women’s Society.” During the 20th century, the expanding aging population promoted the establishment of agencies and organizations that dealt with issues such as healthcare, nursing homes, senior service activities, and social security.
The accessibility of resources for seniors can have a very real effect on their physical, emotional, and mental health. Through the implementation of senior centers, food programs, and activities provided by assisted livings, the overall well-being of seniors can flourish. By having the opportunity to have this access to programs through institutions and organizations allow seniors to be a part of something. Sadly, providing the access to resources for seniors is an issue many put in the back of their minds and do not realize until they are in need.
